Preparing for Your Session – Newborns

Newborn Session

Congratulations on your new arrival!!!  We are so excited that you have chosen us to capture your little one.  To help you prepare for your upcoming session here is some useful information to look over.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Session Details

Newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home.  We will bring over a simple studio set-up that does not take up much room at all.  Most times all it takes is just moving the kitchen table and setting up there.  A typical newborn session may take between 2-3 hours.  Please make sure that everyone involved is aware of the amount of time your session may take.  There is no rush with a newborn session.  The key to a successful newborn session is to relax and go with the flow.  We work on baby time.

It is best to have your session within the first two weeks after your baby is born.   Babies under two weeks usually just want to sleep and that makes it easier for getting those cute curled up sleepy shots.  Additionally baby acne and cradle cap usually has kicked in yet.

Clothing

Newborns photograph best in bare skin.  Before we arrive it is best to have your baby dressed in loose clothes or just a diaper and bundled in a blanket.  While clothes are not typically used for newborn sessions accessories such as headbands, hats, and ties are adorable.  Swanky Babies (in down-town Kennewick) is a local children’s shop that has a great selection of headbands and hats.  Pipsqueaks is another great local children’s boutique.  Including a special handmade blanket or stuffed animal is a great way to personalize your images.  You can even incorporate mom’s or dad’s favorite hobbies or occupation.

I will often use mom or dad as a backdrop.  If possible please have a black long sleeved shirt available.  Parents and siblings are welcome to join in for a few images.  Simple, classic, solid colors work best.  Bare skin is also an option.

Additional Tips

When we arrive we will set up.  This is the perfect time to feed your baby and get him or her ready to sleep.  Make sure you have a few items nearby such as extra pacifiers, diapers, burp rags, and blankets.  Newborns are happiest when they are warm and cozy.  We recommend turning up the heat  before we arrive.  It may be a tad warm for the adults but the goal is to make your little one warm and relaxed.  Comfortable babies sleep, and most of the poses we strive for look ideal with sleeping babies.  Feel free to look over the newborn gallery or Facebook page to get an idea of the types of images you would like.  We will go over this before we start. Lastly be prepared to relax and have fun!!

If you have any questions please give us a call or email.  We look forward to meeting your new addition.
